Kyoto accommodation tax: ¥200–¥10,000 per person per night since 1 March 2026

What happened. Since 1 March 2026 the City of Kyoto charges a new accommodation tax, per person per night, based on the room price per person:

What it means for you. Most hotels Malaysians book (¥6,000–20,000 per person) fall in the ¥400 band. Three nights for two people: ¥2,400, about RM63 (¥100 = RM2.615, ECB 7 Sept 2026). The tax is paid at the hotel at check-in and is usually not included in the booking-site price.
When it matters. Autumn-leaf season (late November to early December) is when Kyoto hotels are most expensive, with prices up 30–60%. Put the tax in your budget and book rooms you can cancel.
