JR Pass Price Increase on 1 October 2026: New Prices, When to Buy, and When the Pass Isn't Worth It

Short answer. From 1 October 2026, a JR Pass bought through overseas agents (Klook, travel agencies, appointed JR sales offices) costs more: the 7-day ordinary pass goes ¥50,000 → ¥53,000 (≈ RM1,295 → RM1,372). What counts is the purchase date, not your travel date. The official JR web shop keeps the old price for now, with no end date announced yet. And the part that matters most: if your trip is only Tokyo ⇄ Osaka/Kyoto, the 7-day pass loses almost ¥20,000, before or after the increase.
1. What JR announced (press release, 9 April 2026, in Japanese)
I read the original PDF. Three points:
- Overseas agent prices go up for purchases from 1 October 2026 (local time where you buy).
- The official web sales service (JAPAN RAIL PASS Reservation) stays at the current price "for a certain period". JR says it will announce when that period ends. The reason: JR wants people to buy and reserve seats online without going through a counter.
- How you buy and use the pass does not change.
The last increase was on 1 October 2023. This one is about 6%.
2. Price table: old vs new (overseas agents)
Rate: ¥100 = RM2.59 (ECB reference rate, 4 Sept 2026). Child prices are for ages 6–11 at the time of use.

Official web shop: stays at ¥50,000 / 80,000 / 100,000 (ordinary) and ¥70,000 / 110,000 / 140,000 (Green) for now.
3. "Buy before 1 Oct" — what it actually requires
This is the part people miss. Buying early means you hold an Exchange Order, not the pass. Klook's conditions (checked 6 Sept 2026):
- A paper Exchange Order is posted to your home (free delivery). The confirmation email cannot be exchanged in Japan.
- You have 90 days from the purchase date to exchange it for the physical pass at an official exchange office in Japan (airports and major stations).
- After exchanging, you have 30 days to start using it.
- You can buy up to 180 days ahead. Cancellation: 10% fee.
So if you buy on 30 September, you must arrive in Japan and exchange before the end of December 2026. A December trip (school holidays) works. A March 2027 trip (school holidays / sakura) does not — for that one, buy later and compare with the official web shop.
4. After 1 Oct: Klook or the official site?
Honestly, after 1 October 2026 the official web shop is ¥3,000 cheaper (7-day ordinary) for as long as JR keeps the old price (checked 6 Sept 2026). When Klook still makes sense:
- You want to pay in RM with a Malaysian card, and English-language customer support.
- You want the paper Exchange Order in hand before you fly (the official shop expects you to manage everything online, including seat reservations).
- You buy before 1 Oct — same price, and Klook keeps your booking record in one place.
If you're comfortable with a Japanese website and your trip is after October, the official shop is the cheaper choice. Both links are below; pick what suits you.
5. Nozomi and Mizuho: the pass alone isn't enough
The fastest train on the Tokyo–Osaka line is the Nozomi. The JR Pass does not let you ride Nozomi or Mizuho for free. You need a special add-on ticket for JR Pass holders, sold only in Japan (JR ticket offices or reserved-seat machines):

6. The honest sum: 7-day pass vs individual tickets
A Nozomi ticket Tokyo–Shin-Osaka, reserved seat, one way: ¥14,500–14,800 (2026 secondary sources differ slightly; check your date on SmartEX. Checked 6 Sept 2026). So:

Simple rule: the national pass pays when your individual tickets in 7 days add up to more than ¥50,000 — usually 3 or more cities with one long leg (Hiroshima, Kanazawa, or up to Tohoku). For the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka golden route most Malaysians do, individual tickets are cheaper, and you can ride the Nozomi with no add-on.

7. So what would I do?
- Trip in Oct–Dec 2026, 3 or more cities → buy the pass before 30 Sept through an agent (old price, paper Exchange Order to your door), exchange within 90 days.
- Trip after December, 3 or more cities → buy close to your travel date. Compare the official shop (old price while it lasts) with Klook.
- Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka only → no pass needed. Buy individual Shinkansen tickets (Klook sells single-ride Shinkansen tickets too) and take the Nozomi.
- Travelling with children aged 6–11 → child passes are half price; count them in the total.
